About

Armenian-American soprano, Tatev Baroyan joined the Metropolitan Opera in the 2024-25 season for the Met’s premiere of Golijov’s Ainadamar and made her European debut at the Salzburger Landestheater, singing the role of lolanta in a unique combination of Tchaikovsky’s lolanta and Nutcracker. She was invited back this year to perform Tatiana in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin after debuting the role at the Romanian National Opera House. Tatev will join the Bregenzer Festspiele this summer to perform the leading soprano role in Janácek’s The Excursions of Mr. Brouëek.

Born in Yerevan, Armenia, soprano Tatev Baroyan began her musical journey at Tchaikovsky Specialized Music School in her hometown and continued her vocal studies at the Komitas State Conservatory. After emigrating to the United States, Tatev joined Sarasota Opera’s Apprenticeship program and then Will Crutchfield’s Teatro Nuovo’s Studio Artist program in New York, for which she prepared and sang various roles including Alaide in Bellini’s La straniera, Anna in Rossini’s Maometto Il as well as the soprano part in Rossini’s Stabat Mater. Tatev joined the New York City Opera and to date has performed with the company in productions of La Traviata, La Boheme, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and for the world premiere of Ricky lan Gordon’s The Garden of the Finzi Contini. She has appeared as well in various concerts including a celebration commemorating the centennial of Giacomo Puccini’s passing in which she sang excerpts from La rondine, Turandot and Suor Angelica. In July of 2024, she performed this program with the Buffalo Symphony.

Her talent has been acknowledged through various competitions and awards. Crowned by the public and the press, Tatev received the Audience Award and the International Press Award at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition. During the past seasons she received second prize in the Gerda Lissner Vocal Competition, second prize in the Southeast Region of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, first prize in the Florida District competitions, second prizes in the Vero Beach Rising Stars Competition, Opera at Florham Competition,  and the Premiere Opera Foundation International Vocal Competition.

"The Armenian-American soprano Tatev Baroyan shines and captivates both vocally and dramatically as Tatiana. One is tempted to call her the Tatiana of the century. Her portrayal of the dreamy girl is as moving as that of Prince Gremin's self-assured wife, who is only a few years older. Against the backdrop of Tchaikovsky's rich and dynamically delicate sound, which Leslie Suganandarajah conducts the Mozarteum Orchestra, Baroyan masterfully performs her part: the sheer volume of her soprano is enchanting at every register and volume. Her phrasing and articulation are virtuosic. As an actress, she conveys even the smallest emotional nuances of facial expression and gesture. "

- DrehPunktKultur

"From the overall excellent ensemble, however, Tatev Baroyan as Tatiana particularly stood out, combining a perfect portrayal of the role with a vocally outstanding performance. Baroyan, who made her European debut a few years ago at the Salzburg State Theatre as Iolanta, possesses a golden, radiant voice that encompasses brilliance, brightness, and a slightly velvety, dark timbre. With a powerful yet seemingly effortless sound, sparkling high notes, and a touching emotional expression that was also audible in the nuances of her timbre, she proved to be the ideal choice for the role of Tatiana, and one can only hope that she will be heard in this role at many more European opera houses."

- Review by Elena Deinhammer / Editor, DAS OPERNMAGAZIN

"Tatev Baroyan feels and fulfills Tatiana with touchingly natural acting The young Armenian soprano from America possesses, dare I say, one of the most beautiful soprano voices of our time, with a darkly hued lower register that soars almost seamlessly through a solid middle range to golden, radiant high notes."

- Der neue Marker, 03/2026

"Tatev Baroyan from Armenia possesses a flawless, clear, and naturally resonant soprano voice, who brought all her qualities to her rendition of "Un bel di vedremo" from Puccini's Madama Butterfly . With subtle gestures and a smooth, well-focused, free voice, she sang movingly and with apparent ease and simplicity. Both the audience and the media jury chose her as the winner."

"Recognize the accomplished art of Tatev Baroyan , crowned by the public and by the international press jury. The Armenian soprano swims in Puccini like a fish in water: softness in the attacks, satiny timbre, flexibility of line despite the tensions of the writing, and just the right graduation of emotions in the conduct of the story."

"Soprano Tatev Baroyan delivered a heart-wrenching, devotional rapture of “Senza Mamma” from Suor Angelica. Baroyan’s voice, filled with sorrow and longing, drew the audience into Angelica’s tragic world. Her emotional depth and vocal control set a poignant tone for the night."

"...The rejoicing, warm quality of her voice worked well with the venue as her series of calls reverberated with a lovely ease."

"... her brisk, excited phrases lifted her from the tumult of the middle section as she worked up to a soaring conclusion."
